National School Lunch Program  (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) provides cash assistance to States to operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools and residential childcare institutions. The program is administered at the Federal level by FNS. State education agencies administer the SBP at the State level, and local school food authorities operate it in schools.

USDA Economic Research Service focuses on policies of government agencies and international organizations regarding agricultural production and income, agriculture and the environment, the rural economy, food consumption, and trade. Policy analysis encompasses economic impacts, costs, and benefits of policies that are proposed or enacted.

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture is a research and education center with statewide programs to develop sustainable agricultural practices that are both profitable and conserve natural resources.

Action for Healthy Kids is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools. They work in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to improve children's nutrition and increase physical activity, which will in turn improve their readiness to learn.

The Obesity Prevention, Treatment and Research Act is a comprehensive piece of legislation that would provide for research and treatment for individuals who are overweight or obese. Also, the bill would support those who are at risk for developing diabetes and other diet related illnesses. It would authorize Medical Nutrition Therapy in Medicaid and in the State Children's Health Insurance Program. If you are interested in supporting this bill visit the American Dietetic Association website and contact your Senator, ask them to sign on as original co-sponsors to The Obesity Prevention, Treatment and Research Act.
